Site Notice
Privacy
I run this site myself. It is a place for writing and research, and it collects as little as it can while still working. This notice sets out what is collected, why, who processes it, and how to ask me to change or remove it.
Who is responsible
The site is operated by Dr Jorge Pereira Campos, who is the data controller for the purposes of the United Kingdom and European Union General Data Protection Regulation. For anything to do with your data, write to jorge@drjorgecampos.com.
What is collected, and why
Readership. The site uses Google Analytics to see which essays are read, from which countries, and through which sources. Google Analytics sets first-party cookies and processes your IP address, device and browser information, and the pages you view. I use this only to understand what is worth writing more of. The lawful basis is my legitimate interest in understanding readership; you can opt out at any time, below.
The letter. If you subscribe, your email address is stored by my email provider so I can send you the letter. The lawful basis is your consent, which you give by subscribing and can withdraw at any time through the unsubscribe link in any letter, or by writing to me.
Messages you send. If you write through the contact form, the name, email address, optional affiliation, and message you provide are sent to me and held in my email so that I can reply. The lawful basis is my legitimate interest in responding to you, and, where relevant, in taking steps at your request.
Hosting and security. Like any website, this one is served by a hosting provider that briefly records technical request data, including IP addresses, in order to run the site and keep it secure. The lawful basis is my legitimate interest in operating the site safely.
Who processes it
I keep the number of third parties small. Those that process data on my behalf are Google (analytics), Resend (the letter and contact messages), and Vercel (hosting). Each acts under my instructions and under its own data protection terms, and some may process data outside the United Kingdom or the European Union under the safeguards those terms provide.
How long it is kept
Analytics data is retained according to Google's settings and is not tied to your name. Your subscription is kept until you unsubscribe. Messages you send are kept only as long as I need them to correspond with you, and are deleted on request.
What the site does not do
There are no advertising or remarketing trackers, no user accounts, no comments or reactions, and no behavioural profiles. I do not sell or rent your data, and I do not share it beyond the providers named above.
Your rights
If you are in the United Kingdom or the European Union, you have the right to ask for a copy of the data I hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to how it is used, and to receive it in a portable form. Where processing rests on your consent, you can withdraw that consent at any time. To exercise any of these, write to jorge@drjorgecampos.com and I will respond.
You also have the right to complain to a supervisory authority: the Information Commissioner's Office in the United Kingdom, the Comissão Nacional de Proteção de Dados in Portugal, or the authority in the country where you live.
Cookies
The site sets the first-party analytics cookies described above, and a small preference cookie that remembers your choice of language. A short television interview is embedded on the home page from YouTube in privacy-enhanced mode; it is requested, and may set YouTube’s own cookies, only if you choose to play it. To opt out of Google Analytics here and across the web, install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. Most browsers also let you block or clear cookies in their settings.
Updates
I will update this notice if the site changes. The date below shows the current version.
