Is University Worth it?
Advantages of a University Degree
You will benefit from structured knowledge. Universities typically employ researchers who are at the forefront of knowledge creation in their field. However, many might lack professional experience.
You will benefit from the University's reputation once you get to the job market.
You might find a passion for something else whilst at university. It is not uncommon that whilst participating in other activities at university, you find a passion for, for example, acting, or music (or alcohol)!
You will make friends for life and that network is invaluable. Once you are in the job market, your friends will be a source of great help to further your career!
The university network is also quite helpful. They often have awesome partnerships and graduate offices that will help you find a job!
The sense of accomplishment is one of the best feelings in the world!
Education is one of the most important things in the world! It is priceless!
Disadvantages of a University Degree
It costs money! Depending where you are from, of course! For many American folks higher education means life-long debts - and that is something quite hard to advocate for. If you are lucky enough to be from an European country, you can get very high quality education for a very fair price (500 - 1000€ per year).
It will take time! University life can take you anywhere from 3 to 10 years. Think wisely before commiting to this. However, I still see it as a wise investment.
Opportunity Cost - Meaning that for the 3, 5, 10 years you are studying, you are not (in the majority of cases) earning money or even experience.
You might not enjoy the whole university vibe! University might just not be for you. It won't be easy! And if you are not passionate about the subject, ugh you might have a hard time!
Conclusion
Obviously, if you want to become a doctor, nurse, engineer, professor, or any other specialty profession, you need to go to university. If you want to go into Management, start your own company, go into Marketing, you do NOT necessarily need to have a university degree. HOWEVER, I do believe that university (depending on which) is an incredible investment! So, my children, if you are reading this, I encourage you to go to university and enjoy it to the fullest!
