How are Productivity Influencers Lying to You?
In today's fast-paced and cut-throat world, everyone wants to maximize their productivity and efficiency. We are bombarded with tips and tricks to get things done faster and better, and it seems like every other day there is a new productivity influencer with a new approach or philosophy. But how much of what they say is actually true? Are they really helping us be more productive, or are they just spreading myths for views? In this post, I explain the issues I have with productivity influencers and why their advice might actually hurt people.
1. The Hard Work Doctrine
One of the most pervasive and damaging productivity myths is the idea that hard work is the key to success. This is often touted by productivity influencers, who claim that if you just work harder and longer, you will achieve more and be more successful. However, this idea is not only false, but can also be harmful to your health and well-being. You don’t need to read any scientific studies to realise that working long hours can lead to burnout, stress, and other health problems, which can ultimately decrease your productivity and effectiveness.
2. The Multitasking Fallacy
Another common productivity myth is the idea that multitasking is a valuable skill and can help you get more done in less time. Many influencers claim that if you can juggle multiple tasks at once, you will be able to accomplish more and be more productive. However, research has shown that multitasking is actually counterproductive and can lead to lower-quality work and increased stress. In fact, studies have shown that when we multitask, our brains switch back and forth between tasks, which can result in a decrease in productivity.
3. The "One Size Fits All" Approach
Many productivity influencers promote a "one size fits all" approach, claiming that their techniques and strategies can work for anyone, regardless of their circumstances or personality. However, this approach ignores the fact that different people have different strengths, weaknesses, and preferences when it comes to productivity.
