# Dr Jorge Pereira Campos

Dr Jorge Pereira Campos is a researcher, writer, and advisor on adolescent
development inside algorithmic and AI systems. He holds a PhD from the
University of St Andrews on Human Behaviour and Intelligent Systems and an
MSc in Health Psychology from the University of Strathclyde, and works
privately with families, schools, and the institutions responsible for
young people. His peer-reviewed work appears in developmental psychology,
surveillance studies, and human-computer interaction. An educational
programme he leads was recognised by King Charles III in 2024. He divides
his time between London, Porto, and Geneva.

## Positioning
The work turns on one question: what happens to a developing self when
childhood is spent inside machines that watch, predict, and respond. Its
central idea is the inferential childhood, growing up in the company of
systems that infer who a child is and act on the inference, at the one
age a person is meant to be working that out for themselves. Generative
AI is the turn that matters here: it carries the logic of the recorded,
predicted life into the last unrecorded space of childhood. The two
things a developing self most needs, the freedom to struggle and the
freedom to be forgotten, friction and forgetting, are the two things
these systems are engineered to remove. The remedy the work argues for
is human, and still within reach.
